'Look at me, look at me, I'm perfect for you!'
A top on a rail tries hard to attract me
From the rail to the floor it throws itself
I pause, pick it up, and smooth the thread
But today I don't want any vintage clothing
And I know where it is that I'm going to head
Round this room there are names that are calling me
Sorted alphabetically, in their genres, they shout
Jammed together on the charity shop bookshelf
They're all desperately begging to be let out

Guess Who?
I think I've seen your face before
Ok Cupid? Plenty of Fish?
One of the many - I can't be sure
As I look at your picture
It occurs to me you
May be playing "Guess Who?"
Too

Strictly Dr Who
Doesn't every female long to be whisked away
By a man in a blue police box
and explore galaxies
I see no contradiction
with a once in a blue moon
desire to wear heels and a dress
and dance like the stars

Serpent in paradise
"I'll be incommunicado"
He said
"I'm off to a heavenly isle
which hasn't got wifi or mobile
so I'll be out of touch for a while."
There was no reason not to believe him
I carried on with my life
Things weren't too horrendous without him
No arguments, great emotion or strife
Then I saw the weekend paper
Could barely believe my eyes
The announcement of his marriage
and a photo of him and his wife

Status Epilepticus
I was told once that I was brave
Having no choice
Is not bravery
Just acceptance
If you choose to stay
To talk to me, comfort me
When I'm in hospital
Fighting to understand
How my brain and body have let me down again
Then you're the brave one
You could choose

The creature of metal?
Nonsentient.

Stuck for a present?
The romantic appeal of bedsocks
Is something you should consider wisely
Especially
When your companion's feet
Range in temperature
from cold

Martyred by media
Is this how it ends?
The so called civilisation of the West
attacked
Brought to its knees
on a daily drip feed
of media magnified terror tactics
Not so much frightened by fear itself
but by the poisonous portrayal in papers
and chaos on camera

All cats are alike in the dark
The reason you didn’t call me by name
In hindsight seems so trite
By never saying anything
You had a 100% chance of getting it right…

you wrapped my still beating heart in a web of lies

Missing...inaction
You implied I was naïve
You told me your lies
I had no reason
Not to believe them
You said you'd a complex life
Snippets you’d let fall
But had you ever planned
To mention your girlfriend
at all?

On a specs life
The benefits of vision are many
Advantages of poor vision, few
But being bat-blind from childhood
The National Health aided my view
The fuzzy world became edged and sharp
After a series of long drawn out tests
A discussion, a wait, and prescription -
and a pair of pale pink NHS specs

You carved your name in my flesh
Each scar
Your words
Over again
A faultline
A failure
My memories
Gone
Fractured by fuses
In a brain
Wired wrong

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori*
Children in uniform shuffle and talk
The solemnity of the occasion
marred by the squawk
of somebody's headphones
a girl in a hurry
paying no attention
to the once a year ceremony
The remembrance of people, of heroes
mothers, fathers and lovers
Killed, maimed in mind or body
Doing their bit for others
The two minute silence ends with bugle song
Then "we will remember them."
- but for how long?

Too many men and women
Remembered by too few

Populated by poppy wearers

Truth in advertising
Your advert was misleading
The words half truths and lies
And although I was happy reading
I was naïve and raw
My eyes
Focussed on what I wanted
Seeing things that you did not say
And although you asked for a girlfriend
You just wanted to get laid

The incredible (in)visible woman
Weighed down by belongings
Trying to hold on to memory -
But books, souvenirs, postcards
Tell a past I barely recall
If I wasn't depicted, observable
In photos on my phone,
In my room, around me
I'd swear I'd never existed at all

NaNoWriMo - an explanation
NaNoWriMo is the abbreviation for National Novel Writing Month. I have tried twice, failed twice. Learnt from my mistakes. Which is why I am doing NaPoWriMo. I'm not even sure if this is an actual thing. Will have a look online later. Basically I am writing a poem on this blog every day throughout November. Wish me luck.
